Report: Welker ready for training camp

According to our pals at Gresh and Zo on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Patriots WR Wes Welker “will be (a) full
participant in Training Camp
.” He “
still has to be officially cleared medically, but
sources say that will happen

And yes, that’s huge news.

It’s not that surprising, of course (considering what we saw in the spring), but it signifies a certain amount of confidence the team has in Welker’s recovery. By putting Welker out there next week, the Patriots would forgo the ability to put him on PUP, and lose the chance to save his roster spot for the first six weeks of the season. So this decision is tied to one of those 53 places at the table when the season starts.

We reported back in June on the particulars in Welker’s injury, surgery and rehab, and the strong likelihood that he’d be ready for Week 1. We also showed you how Welker’s timetable looked similar to Philip Rivers’ ACL recovery from 2008, and why that’s a pretty good indication that the Cincy game was in play for No. 83.

But Gresh and Zo’s report is the strongest sign yet that Marvin Lewis and Co. should be sure to include dealing with Welker in their plans for Sept. 12.
