Patriots cut ties with 2010 pick (for now)

A little while ago, the Patriots formalized the trade for Quinn Ojinnaka (Atlanta will get a draft pick in return) and the release of Terrence Johnson, and also announced the signing of Ross Ventrone and the waiving of Kade Weston.

Weston was third of the Patriots’ four seventh-round choices in April.

But there’s a catch. The Patriots actually waived/injured Weston, which means that if he clears waivers, his rights will revert to New England and he’ll go on injured reserve. This is a mechanism in the system that keeps teams from stashing young players.

In fact, this is exactly what the Broncos did with safety Josh Barrett a couple weeks back. But the Patriots kept Barrett from getting to IR, claiming him off waivers and placing him on the 80-man roster (they can move him to IR after the final cutdown.)

Ventrone returns after being cut eight days ago.
