For the record, in this storied, annual, end-of-the-preseason showdown between Northeast corridor neighbors, Eli Manning has only been a healthy scratch once — back in 2008, when the Giants were coming off a world championship. By comparison, the last time Brady played in the final preseason game was in 2003, when the Patriots played the Bears instead of the Giants.
Here’s more on tomorrow’s opponent …
* With Manning Family Caddy Jim Sorgi moving to IR, the backup quarterback topic is a hot one in New York. As such, expect ex-Oklahoma castoff and second-year Giant Rhett Bomar (interesting backstory on him) to get a good long look.
* One reason why the Giants’ first offense might get some action — This will be the unit’s last chance to work against a 3-4 before what should be a big Week 7 showdown with Wade Phillips, DeMarcus Ware and the Cowboys. Additionally, another NFC East rival, the Redskins, is making the switch to a 3-4.
* My buddy Ohm Youngmisuk caught up with Osi Umeniyora, who’s apologetic about his actions during the team’s tailspin last year. But …
* Veteran Giants beat man Ralph Vacchiano senses some of the problems that existed in 2009 look like they might resurface (Maybe I should re-consider my pick for NFC East champion …).
And if you’re one of those people counting the days til the preseason is over … Hey, we’re almost there.
