Making the team the hard way

The Patriots’ pattern has been to keep an undrafted free agent or two following training camp, and this year wasn’t an exception, with Dane Fletcher (thanks to Patriots.com for the photo) and Kyle Love making the cut.

Interestingly, two long-term former undrafted free agents — Eric Alexander and Pierre Woods — were shown the door as a result. And so it goes.

Does this number of UDFA comings and goings make the Patriots unusual?

Actually, it doesn’t. ESPN.com’s AFC East dude Tim Graham tracked the undrafted rookies to make teams in the division, and the results show that rebuilding Bills kept five, the Dolphins held on to three and the Jets matched the Patriots number with two on board for Week 1.

That underscores what crapshoot the draft really is. Six players from the Patriots last two drafts are gone, and three undrafted free agents (throwing Brian Hoyer in) remain from those years. And how about what happened in Miami? Patrick Turner, a 2009 third-round pick, is gone, and 2010 UDFA receivers Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore are on the club.

Pretty interesting.
