The Patriots have traded fifth-year RB Laurence Maroney to the Denver Broncos, according to an NFL source.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to report the deal; he reports that the Broncos will receive Maroney and the Patriots’ 2011 sixth-round pick, while New England gets Denver’s 2011 fourth-round pick.

Maroney missed two of the Patriots’ four preseason games, then was inactive for New England’s opener against Cincinnati. He rushed for 2,430 yards and 21 touchdowns in his four years as a Patriot.
