Ok, so maybe in this case “getting to know” isn’t quite the right term for this particular player. After all, Tom Brady is a three-time champion, two-time Super Bowl MVP, one-time NFL MVP whose every move on and off the football field is chronicled and scrutinized, in the sports pages and the gossip magazines.
But there still may be one or two things you don’t know about Brady — like his favorite NBA teams (yes, plural) growing up.
Brady enters today’s game with San Diego with 1,203 yards passing, 10 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on the season — and is completing two-thirds of his pass attempts. Last week, he was named the 20th best player in the history of the NFL during NFL Network’s series ranking the top 100 players of all time.
Favorite TV show: “Dexter.” (That show is dark, no?) It is, but it’s funny though. That’s why I think it’s so good.
Favorite meal: Steak. Just a good, barbequed steak, just on the grill.
Prized possession: Probably our dogs…definitely our dogs. We have two at the house.
Pre-game ritual: None. I’m very anti-ritual.
First job: Paperboy, San Mateo Times. The problem was coming to collect – that’s when you used to have to go to the door to collect, then people wouldn’t answer the door [laughs]. I probably made $50, $60 a month, which I thought was a lot of money at the time.
Favorite athlete not in the NFL: Probably Kobe Bryant. (You grew up a Laker fan?) Lakers and Celtics. I don’t know how you could like both, but that’s who was good at the time. Bird and Magic.
Last concert attended: I think it was U2, last year, here [in Boston]. And Jack Johnson. Maybe it was Jack Johnson, out in California.
Favorite breakfast cereal: Honey Nut Cheerios.
Place I want to visit but haven’t yet: China. I just hear so much about it, what they’re becoming in the world. I think it would be fascinating to go see.
