With the Patriots announcing that guard Logan Mankins had signed his restricted free-agent tender and returned to the club just moments before the weekly Tuesday conference call, there of course was a lot of talk about the two-time Pro Bowler with Bill Belichick, Nick Caserio and running backs coach Ivan Fears.
Belichick on Mankins’s return
Well, Logan came in, I met with him this morning, it’s good to have him back with us. A great player and person for our football team, he’s tough, he’s smart, he’s dependable, you can’t have too many players like that on your football team. We’re glad to have him back.
Neither Belichick nor Caserio would get into detail about the expected roster exemption the club will receive enabling the Pats to carry 54 players for a certain period of time. Caserio said any contract discussions would remain between the team and Mankins and his representatives.
Caserio on Mankins
He’s in the building, it’s good that he’s here, (but) he’s no different than any other player on the team, in the building: they’ll start to prepare for opponent and we’ll make a decision on who plays…Logan has been good player for us, he’s been solid, reliable, has a lot of the traits we look for.
Fears on Mankins
The guys are jumping for guy. Having another playmaker like him? Plus he’s fresh? We’re kind of excited about it.
Fears on Danny Woodhead’s pass-protection skills
Great. He’s done a great job with it. He’s a smart guy…done an excellent job picking up our schemes and most importantly he’s been doggone good as a blocker. He’s stood some guys up, cut some guys down.
Woodhead’s key first-down conversion late against the Vikings
We call those guys playmakers. They have that. That’s why they’re on the field. If you go back to Kevin Faulk and think of the catches he made through the years…some guys have that ability. Randy Moss is one of the best deep threats in the history of the NFL. Danny has a little knack about him. He hasn’t let us down one bit. That’s something they have.
Caserio on Randy Moss hitting the waiver wire today
We’ll do what we do every day with the waiver wire, we’ll assess the names that come through, and make a determination on what’s best for the team.
Caserio on the Pats’ open practice squad spot
I think we’re getting close this afternoon; it didn’t work out last week. We’re close to resolution today, if not by end of day today, then tomorrow by practice. There’s a couple of candidates, but a few things we’re trying to get worked out.
