Gostkowski placed on injured reserve

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots announced that they have placed kicker Stephen Gostkowski on injured reserve.

Gostkowski has a partial tear of an upper quad muscle, a league source confirms, an injury that takes a minimum of six weeks to heal.

The roster move means Gostkowski will miss the rest of the season, and so Shayne Graham — who was signed Tuesday — is much more than just an injury fill-in.

Quarterback Tom Brady was surprised to hear of the move.

“I didn’t realize that. That’s news to me,” Brady said. “That’s a bummer. He’s been a hell of player here, a great kicker. We’ve got a few guys put on IR this year that are really great, dependable players that have worked hard: Kevin (Faulk) and Ty Warren. So he’ll be missed.”

We’ll have more on this as it develops.
