UPDATE: Scott gunning for Welker?

While a few of his teammates have found it impossible not to fan the flames of the Patriots-Jets rivalry this week, New York linebacker Bart Scott, whom Rex Ryan brought with him from the Ravens last year, has been quiet for the most part.

Until now.

Asked about Wes Welker’s 10-foot-references-in-less-than-10-minutes press conference the other day, a subtle jab at Ryan’s presumed participation in a foot-fetish video with his wife that’s posted online, Scott took up for his coach, and may have taken it too far.

“I’ll tell you what,” Scott told Newsday on Friday. “Be very careful what you say about our coach. His [Welker’s] days in a uniform will be numbered. Put it like that.”

On Friday, Ryan, who has had plenty to say over the last week-plus, but didn’t say much about Welker’s foot chat.

“I think this is a huge rivalry-type game and anything goes,” he said. “I can take it. I’m not going to discuss it, but I can take it.”

UPDATE: A league source says that NFL VP of football operations Ray Anderson has contacted teams this week to remind players that any trash talk is to “remain outside the white lines.” If any illegal physical acts take place, the source said, comments will be taken into account in evaluating disciplinary action.
