Tom Brady returned to Gillette Stadium yesterday to get ready for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he used the bye week to spend time with his family, he said this morning during his weekly interview on WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan.
Brady got a laugh out of Rob Gronkowski’s adventurous bye week, addressed preparing for the Steelers and a few other topics.
Did he see the pictures of Rob Gronkowski posing with adult film star Bibi Jones? “No, but I’ve heard. He never ceases to amaze me. I would have guessed there would be pictures of him somehow with his shirt off, posing or something like that. I’m just glad, I’m no longer the one that people are making fun of on my team on a daily basis.”
Would he be surprised if Gronkowski is called into coach Bill Belichick’s office: “He’s used to that walk into coach’s office now. He probably knows it’s coming. … He has more fun than anybody I’ll tell you that. He doesn’t miss a fun day.”
On the bye week: “I was with my kids. We went on vacation to the Bahamas. I was with my wife and my kids and just to see them play and build sand castles on the beach, you never think it’s going to be this much fun. You realize how much your mom and dad really love you when you’re able to spend some time with your kids.”
On Jets CB Darrelle Revis vs. Steelers SS Troy Polamalu: “They’re very different players. Troy is a phenomenal player. I watched a bunch of his highlights with coach Belichick yesterday in our film study. He’s as good as he’s ever been. He flies around the field. He’s incredibly fast and instinctive. He covers a lot of ground out there. You have to keep your eyes on him on every play. I’d say he’s more comparable to Ed Reed than Revis. Revis they put him on a receiver and he takes him out of the game and he does a hell of job of doing that. … [Troy] makes plays that very few guys in the league can make.”
On Broncos QB Tim Tebow: “I have not had the chance to see him play very much. We haven’t played many of the same opponents, so it’s hard for me to really evaluate. Obviously, [Bill Belichick] is good friends with (former Florida coach) Urban Meyer and Urban’s come up and seen our team, and we always have a lot of Gators, so there’s been a lot of Florida games on over the years. Aaron Hernandez had a great relationship with him. … I know, myself, in my second or third year, you’re a long ways from where you’re going to be as a player. I’ve learned so much and I’m still learning and it’s my 12th year. … It’s a long process for a quarterback and we’re all trying to get better on a regular basis.”
Brady said he watched a couple of games during the bye and was asked about what a fan misses in watching the game on television compared to game film.
“It’s hard for the viewer to understand what a team is trying to do. Some plays a running back may get stopped for no gain, and you say, ‘Oh, there wasn’t much there,” but there’s a reason there wasn’t much there.
“Maybe one of the calls by an offensive lineman got miscommunicated and instead of going to the middle linebacker, he went to the strong-side linebacker. There’s things like that where even the commentators don’t know. That’s the hard part about football. It’s very much a chess match and you don’t really get that watching a TV copy of the game. A lot of times you end up following the ball, which is what they have to show. But there’s always a game within a game on the football field and there are individual matchups that are won a play by play basis. Ultimately, you put enough of those together and you either stop a team from scoring points or the offense scores points.”
