Belichick: ‘That wasn’t our best effort’

FOXBOROUGH — Patriots coach Bill Belichick was quick and to the point about Sunday’s 20-18 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He was not happy.

“Well unfortunately that wasn’t our best effort out there today,” Belichick said. “But give Arizona credit. They’re a good football team. They made the plays they had to make to win. We had our chances and in the end we just couldn’t make enough of them, we just couldn’t do enough. Hopefully we can play better, coach better next week; do a better job. Just didn’t do well enough today, it’s as simple as that. In any phase of the game. Plenty of mistakes out there. We need to correct them. We need to coach better, we need to play better, we need to do better than that.”

Belichick was asked about playing it safe to set up Stephen Gostkowski’s failed 42-yard field goal attempt that would’ve have won the game as time expired.

“We scored a touchdown, got it called back,” Belichick said. “We had a touchdown called back.”

He had no comment on the status of Aaron Hernandez, who left in the first half with an ankle injury.
