Bill Belichick was fined $50,000 Wednesday for making improper contact with an official after Sunday’s game vs. Baltimore. That’s a lot of money, but Belichick’s salary should also be considered when gauging the relative weight of the fine.
Belchick’s reported salary is somewhere around $7.5 million. He may make more or less than that depending on endorsements and other stipulations, but $7.5 million is a good working number. Divide the fine of $50,000 by Belichick’s salary and it represents about 0.6 percent of his total income. Multiply 0.6 percent (or .006) by another salary and you can extrapolate the relative impact of the fine on an average person.
For example, to a person who makes $50,000 a year, an equivalent to Belichick’s fine would be something like $300. To someone who makes $85,000 a year the fine would be felt as a $510 fine. In other words, Your Salary x .006 = Belichick’s fine.
