FOXBOROUGH — Despite a 52-28 drubbing of the Buffalo Bills in Week 4 of the season, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady doesn’t want to overlook the fact that offense could do better, especially after having a played a porous first half in that game.
Down 14-7 in the second quarter, the Bills were driving in the red zone against the Patriots before Brandon Spikes forced a fumble with a crushing hit on C.J. Spiller. The Patriots went down, 21-7, in the third quarter before forcing three punts in a row. Spikes forced another fumble in that game, as the defense spurred the team along in the second half.
“I think [the offense] never really clicked,” Brady said. “I think the defense clicked, I think the special teams clicked, I think everything [goes together] and it’s complimentary football and capitalizing on turnovers. We didn’t play very well in the first half. So we’re down 21-7, it was a little bit of an adverse situation and we found ourselves a way to dig out of it. Hopefully we don’t have to dig our way out of it this week.”
The Patriots (5-3) are coming off the bye week, having done some self-evaluation. However, the details of which are closely guarded secrets in Foxborough.
“We’ve got to play better than we played,” Brady said vaguely. “And hopefully that starts this week. Yesterday, we had a good day at practice. We gotta go out there, and have a few more good days. But there’s a lot of things that we need to improve on.”
The break did allow some time for the team to rejuvenate with several players nursing injuries.
“Once you’re into the week, like we are now, it feels like a normal week of football,” Brady said. “You always try to prepare as hard as you can, use all the extra time to get ready physically and mentally. There’s nothing magic about it, it’s just a matter of putting the work in like we do every week and going out and playing well.
“It’s a nice little break for a few days,” Brady continued. “It came at a good time for us. So hopefully guys used it well, and like you said come back refreshed. We had a good day of practice yesterday so guys felt pretty good out there. Hopefully we feel good on Sunday. That’s the most important thing is to use the week to prepare, and not empty your tank on Wednesday and Thursday but to go out there and be ready to go on Sunday.”
Brady also attended the beginning of an impromptu Aerosmith Concert in Boston Monday. Asked if he uses any of their music for motivation on gameday, he said yes.
“They have some songs that I like.”
