FOXBOROUGH — Tom Brady has a keen eye for some of the league’s top defensive players, guys he sees on film and respects tremendously.
For Brady, Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis has earned that respect after years battling against the Patriots for the Jets. But Brady conceded that Revis is not his favorite player in the Buccaneers secondary.
“I got respect for a lot of those guys,” Brady said. “Some of the best guys we’ll play against in the league [are] Darrelle Revis, Mark Barron, and Dashon Goldson, who is one of my favorite players.”
Brady got to see Goldson up close when the Patriots and Buccaneers held joint practices in Foxborough last month. The two also tangoed last year, when Goldson was with the San Francisco 49ers, in a 41-34 New England loss.
Not long after the All-Pro safety won his appeal of a one-game suspension Wednesday, Brady was informed that Goldson would be available for Sunday’s game.
But why is he Brady’s favorite?
“Because if I were a safety, I would try to play like him,” Brady said. “He’s a great player. I played against him last year, I always kind of watched him as a 49er. He got his opportunity there after a few years in San Francisco and took advantage of his opportunity.
“He was a big part of the reason why that defense was so good last year and now he’s playing for Tampa. So he’s already made a big impact. He’s a very good player, and practicing against him you sort of see why.”
Goldson had been suspended one game for a hit on Saints running back Darren Sproles in Week 2. He appealed, and on Wednesday, the NFL announced that the punishment had been reduced to a $100,000 fine.
