Patriots, Ninkovich agree to three-year extension

FOXBOROUGH – Some well-deserved news for Patriots’ veteran Rob Ninkovich this morning: he has signed a three-year contract extension with the team that will keep him in New England through 2016.

Ninkovich’s agent tweeted that it is a three-year, $15 million deal with $8.5 million guaranteed.

The 29-year old Ninkovich came to the Patriots during training camp in 2009, after he was released by the Saints on July 30. In New Orleans, the former fifth-round pick was trying to hang on as a long-snapper, but when he arrived in New England, he immediately began working with the defense as a linebacker, though he also remained on special teams.

But Ninkovich really began to shine in 2010, and has continued to make big plays for the Patriots in the years since. Now a defensive end, the Purdue product has a league-high 10 fumble recoveries since 2010, including one in the season-opener against the Bills.
