The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, a California-based Native American tribe, will run an anti-Redskins advertisement “Proud to Be” in seven major cities during Tuesday night’s NBA Finals. The ad appeared online before the Super Bowl but has never appeared before such a wide audience.
The NFL and Washington Redskins owner Dan Synder have faced increasing criticism in recent years to change the name. That pressure has mounted in the face of recent current events. After the NBA issued a lifetime ban to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for making racist comments, Richard Sherman, a star player with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, said he doubted his league would act the same way, “Because we have an NFL team called the Redskins.” The National Congress of American Indians recently sent a letter to NFL players asking for their support in changing the name.
In the 60-second advertisement, Native Americans list off names they like to be called — “father and mother, survivor and patriot” — until a voice-over tells viewers a name they don’t like to be called, flashing to an image of a Redskins helmet. The ad will air in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Sacramento, San Francisco and Washington. The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation did not reveal how much it paid for the time slot, telling the Washington Post only that it was a “significant investment.”
