Bum Phillips, the folksy Texas football icon who coached the Houston Oilers during their Luv Ya Blue heyday and also led the New Orleans Saints, died Friday. He was 90.
‘‘Bum is gone to Heaven,’’ son Wade, defensive coordinator of the Texans, tweeted Friday night. ‘‘Loved and will be missed by all — great Dad, Coach, and Christian.’’
Phillips died at his home in Goliad, Texas.
Phillips coached in the NFL from 1975 to ’85, gaining fame by leading the Oilers to the playoffs three consecutive years. The Oilers, despite having running back Earl Campbell and quarterback Dan Pastorini, never made it past the AFC title game. Full story for BostonGlobe.com subscribers.
