INDIANAPOLIS – Texas A&M star quarterback Johnny Manziel has been in contact with several current NFL quarterbacks – including Tom Brady—as the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner prepares to begin his professional career.
George Whitfield, who serves as Manziel’s personal quarterback coach and is helping him prepare for the draft, said Thursday afternoon at the NFL Combine that Brady is one of several NFL starters who has wished Manziel well via text message and given him words of encouragement.
“I know he was really excited that he got a chance to touch base with (Brady), get some encouraging words,” Whitfield told the Globe. “He’s always trying to seek out guys about the process, and I know he admires Tom a great deal. That’s just a smart thing to do.”
Whitfield doesn’t know who initiated the exchange, but said Manziel, the potential top pick in the draft, has been hearing from NFL quarterbacks since last season.
“Some guys have just reached out to him and wished him the best of luck,” Whitfield said. “He’s heard from starters, he’s heard from young QBs, he got a chance to meet the Mannings. I just think it’s smart – you’re a young guy and you aspire to go up, you need to find who’s up there and ask them how do you get up there, am I on the right path?”
