Eagles make it seven straight

Donovan McNabb dropped back on the first play of the game, looked left, then right, and let the ball fly into the opponents' hands. It was a rare mistake, and McNabb overcame his first interception in six games to lead the Philadelphia Eagles to their seventh consecutive victory, 25-16 over the Panthers yesterday in Charlotte, N.C.

The win kept the Eagles (9-3) tied with St. Louis for the best record in the NFC and stalled Carolina's attempt to wrap up the NFC South. The Panthers are 8-4.

Philadelphia committed two turnovers, snapping a streak of four consecutive games without a giveaway. McNabb ended his run of 127 attempts without an interception when Mike Rucker picked him off on the first play. Brian Westbrook fumbled away a punt return and the Eagles also failed on a 2-point conversion try.

But it didn't matter as David Akers kicked four field goals, Duce Staley scored on a 2-yard touchdown run, and McNabb threw a 10-yard TD pass to James Thrash to lock up the win.

John Kasay, who came into the game 24 of 27 on field goals this season, missed three -- and an extra point -- for Carolina.

Bengals 24, Steelers 20 -- Jon Kitna's third touchdown pass, an 18-yarder in the rear of the end zone to Matt Schobel with 13 seconds left, finished off a last-minute Cincinnati drive that it a dramatic win in Pittsburgh. Cincinnati (7-5) not only won for the sixth time in seven games to set up an AFC North first-place showdown next week in Baltimore, the Bengals all but eliminated the Steelers (4-8). Tommy Maddox, who was 28 of 42 for 313 yards, had given Pittsburgh its first lead at 20-17 by throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward with 1:05 remaining. But after Jeff Reed's short kickoff gave Cincinnati the ball at its 48, Kitna needed just four plays to get the Bengals in the end zone.

Ravens 44, 49ers 6 -- Ray Lewis returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown to cap a 17-point flurry in the second quarter for Baltimore (7-5), which cruised past visiting San Francisco. The Ravens' outburst included Matt Stover's 28-yard field goal following a 75-yard kickoff return by Lamont Brightful. After a San Francisco punt, Anthony Wright threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Robinson. It took only 14 seconds for Baltimore to add another touchdown. On second down from the San Francisco 20, Garcia's pass deflected off receiver Cedrick Wilson to Lewis.

The return of quarterback Jeff Garcia did nothing to change the fortune of the 49ers (5-7). Back from a three-game absence with a sprained ankle, Garcia went 14 for 29 for 112 yards with a career-high four interceptions.

Rams 48, Vikings 17 -- Marshall Faulk ran for three touchdowns and provided his third straight 100-yard rushing game to carry St. Louis in a matchup of NFC division leaders. The Rams (9-3) solidified their NFC West lead -- they're tied with the Eagles for the best record in the NFC -- and won their 12th straight game at home. The North Division-leading Vikings (7-5) are sinking fast after a 6-0 start.

Faulk had 108 yards on 17 carries and scored on runs of 18, 5, and 7 yards. He has 127 touchdowns, passing Hall of Famers Walter Payton and Jim Brown for fourth on the career list.

Chiefs 28, Chargers 24 -- Priest Holmes ran 31 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and Tony Gonzalez caught two scoring passes from Trent Green as Kansas City won at San Diego to improve to 11-1. The Chiefs weren't able to clinch the AFC West title because Denver beat Oakland. And they didn't at least get a wild-card berth because Miami beat Dallas on Thursday. But the Chiefs maintained their momentum after Doug Flutie rallied the Chargers (2-10) but couldn't finish the job with two fourth-quarter turnovers, including an end-zone interception with 4:07 left.

Bills 24, Giants 7 -- Drew Bledsoe threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns, and Buffalo (5-7) snapped a four-game losing streak by handing host New York (4-8) its fourth straight defeat. Bledsoe threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dave Moore and a 22-yarder to Bobby Shaw in a 17-point second quarter. He had consecutive passes of 21 and 18 yards to set up Travis Henry's 13-yard third-quarter scoring run for the Bills (5-7), who had only scored 35 points in the last four games.

Saints 24, Redskins 20 -- Deuce McAllister did everything but score for visiting New Orleans, getting his ninth consecutive 100-yard rushing game, running for 165 yards on 30 carries, and catching four passes for 31 more. The victory moved the Saints (6-6) back to .500. The Redskins (4-8) have lost three straight. Former Boston College QB Tim Hasselbeck made his NFL start, completing 22 of 42 passes for 232 yards, but also throwing one interception and fumbling once.

Texans 17, Falcons 13 -- Domanick Davis struck for two quick touchdowns early in the third quarter as host Houston (5-7) ruined Michael Vick's return to the Atlanta lineup.Vick was 8 of 11 for 60 yards and ran three times for 16 yards in just over a quarter of action for the Falcons (2-10).

Broncos 22, Raiders 8 -- Clinton Portis carried 34 times for 170 yards and two touchdowns and visiting Denver (7-5) held Oakland (3-9) without a touchdown for the first time this season.

Seahawks 34, Browns 7 -- Matt Hasselbeck threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns and Shaun Alexander rushed for 127 yards and another TD, helping Seattle (8-4) stay perfect at home and sending Cleveland (4-8) to its fifth loss in six games.

Bears 28, Cardinals 3 -- With Chris Chandler sidelined by a sore shoulder, Kordell Stewart threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as Chicago (5-7) dropped Arizona (3-9) to 0-6 on the road.
