Coughlin signs on with the Giants

Tom Coughlin didn't say no to the New York Giants this time around, agreeing to coach them yesterday.

The former Jacksonville Jaguars coach signed a four-year contract, vowing to bring back a brand of smash-mouth, mistake-free football that led New York to two Super Bowls under his mentor, Bill Parcells.

Coughlin and the Giants finalized the deal, worth around $12 million, a day after Coughlin held his second round of meetings with the team.

The Giants offered Coughlin their head job in 1993 after firing Ray Handley. Coughlin turned it down, saying he wanted to complete a rebuilding program he started at Boston College.

Gibbs to return?
Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs could make a surprise return to the Washington Redskins.

The Washington Post, citing sources with connections to Gibbs, reported late last night on its website that Gibbs was in serious discussions about returning to the team that he led to three Super Bowl titles.

The 63-year-old Gibbs coached the Redskins from 1981-92 before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR team. He has been adamant over the years about not wanting to coach again, although he has retained NFL connections. He is currently a minority owner of the Falcons.

Green interviews
Ex-Vikings coach Dennis Green has interviewed with the Oakland Raiders for their coaching vacancy. Green spent Monday afternoon with owner Al Davis and appears the leading candidate. Also, senior assistant Bruce Allen is leaving the Raiders . . . Bills president Tom Donahoe has at least one more candidate to interview for Buffalo's vacancy after spending most of yesterday with former Giants coach Jim Fassel . . . Baltimore Ravens director of player personnel Phil Savage interviewed for the new position of general manager with the Miami Dolphins, who said they're also interested in two minority candidates. Giants director of player personnel Jerry Reese is scheduled to interview Friday, and the Dolphins have requested permission to interview former Patriots general manager Bobby Grier, assistant director of pro scouting with the Houston Texans. Grier is the father of Chris Grier, national scout for the Dolphins for the past four seasons . . . Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is staying with the Dallas Cowboys. Parcells said Zimmer told University of Nebraska officials he was remaining in the pros rather than pursue that coaching vacancy. However the agent for Bill Callahan said the fired Raiders coach will interview at Nebraska today . . . Defensive coordinator Tim Lewis and wide receivers coach Ken Jackson were fired by the Steelers.
