Report: Mularkey will coach Bills

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey has accepted an offer to coach the Buffalo Bills, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported last night.

Mularkey was among the final three candidates for the job, along with Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and former Chicago Bears coach Dick Jauron.

Clayton's report said Mularkey emerged from a meeting with Buffalo owner Ralph Wilson and began calling Bills assistants to tell them he had taken the job.

The 42-year-old Mularkey was said to have won the job because of his past relationship with Bills general manager Tom Donahoe, and his work as an offensive coordinator.

Robinson resigns

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Greg Robinson resigned, two days after an embarrassing playoff loss to Indianapolis.

Robinson told coach Dick Vermeil after Sunday's 38-31 defeat that he would resign if Vermeil thought it was in the team's best interests.

"I told him to think about it," Robinson said. "Well, yesterday afternoon he and I sat down and talked. He told me, 'Greg, Carol [Vermeil's wife] and I spent a long time last night talking about it. We believe it is the right thing."'

Robinson's voice often wavered as he spoke, and Vermeil stood nearby with his arms folded and occasionally wiped away tears.

Cottrell to Vikings

Former Jets assistant Ted Cottrell reached a tentative agreement with the Minnesota Vikings to become their defensive coordinator.

Details will not be released until a contract is signed, a Vikings spokesman said.

The Jets fired Cottrell when the season ended because of a philosophical difference with coach Herman Edwards. He would succeed George O'Leary, who left to become coach at Central Florida.

Coughlin adds on

Giants coach Tom Coughlin started filling out his staff, retaining two assistants who worked under former coach Jim Fassel while hiring two others from his days in Jacksonville. Tight ends coach Mike Pope and assistant special teams coach Mike Priefer, who worked with Coughlin during his final season with the Jaguars in 2002, will be back. Running backs coach Jerald Ingram and strength and conditioning coach Jerry Palmieri worked with Coughlin at Boston College and Jacksonville. The Giants also announced the signings of defensive end Sean Guthrie and running back Antoine Womack (a 2002 Patriots draft pick) . . . The Oakland Raiders interviewed Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon for their coaching vacancy . . . Bobby April is out as special teams coach of the St. Louis Rams, who said they're not renewing his contract for a fourth season . . . Green Bay tight end Bubba Franks and Seattle guard Steve Hutchinson were added to the NFC Pro Bowl squad as injury replacements. Franks will replace Jeremy Shockey of the Giants, while Hutchinson replaces New Orleans's LeCharles Bentley.
