The desperate New York Jets brought back 41-year-old Vinny Testaverde yesterday after starting quarterback Chad Pennington and his backup Jay Fiedler were lost for the season with shoulder injuries.
In turning to Testaverde, who played for the Jets from 1998-2003, the team hopes he can back up untested third-stringer Brooks Bollinger, who is scheduled to start Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
Testaverde led the Jets to the 1998 AFC title game and was the starter before Pennington replaced him in 2002. He was with Dallas last year, but was not with any NFL team in 2005 -- until he called coach Herman Edwards Monday, worked out yesterday, and was signed for the rest of the season.
Davey to join Cardinals
Free agent quarterback Rohan Davey has agreed to terms with the Arizona Cardinals, providing insurance in case Kurt Warner's groin strain proves more serious than expected. Davey's agent, Joel Segal, said the former Patriot would have a physical today before signing a one-year contract. In Warner's absence, fourth-year pro Josh McCown was promoted to the first unit to prepare for Sunday's game against San Francisco in Mexico City. John Navarre, who started one game last year as a rookie, is his backup . . . Lions cornerback Fernando Bryant is out for the season with a separated right shoulder.© Copyright 2006 Globe Newspaper Company.
