GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- In the second overtime NFC Championship game in NFL history, the New York Giants upset the Green Bay Packers 23-20 on Lawrence Tynes' 47-yard field goal in OT. It sends the Giants to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2000 season.
The third time was the charm for Tynes. He made two field goals early from 29 and 37 yards. But he missed two late field goal attempts in the fourth quarter, including a 36-yard attempt that could have won the game at the end of regulation.
The Giants have won 10 straight road games and now they move on to play the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in two weeks. The Giants join the 1975 Dallas Cowboys as the only NFC wild-card teams to make the Super Bowl.
The big play in overtime was an interception by Corey Webster on the Packers' first possession after winning the coin toss in overtime. That was the second interception thrown by Brett Favre (fahrv), who also threw two TDs.
The victory means back-to-back Super Bowls for the Manning family. Eli Manning, the younger brother of Peyton Manning who struggled early in the year, was nerveless on a frigid night in Green Bay. Manning played error-free ball in rough conditions, completing 21-of-40 passes for 254 yards. Plaxico Burress had a big night, catching 11 passes for 154 yards.
Favre, the sentimental favorite, was denied another trip to the Super Bowl. Favre completed 19-of-35 passes for 236 yards while throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The game-time temperature was around zero with minus-23 wind chill. Temperatures fell to 2 below by the second quarter.
