Strahan says he'll stay retired

Seven-time New York Giants Pro Bowler Michael Strahan is staying retired.
"This has been one of the toughest nights of my life," Strahan told FoxSports.com yesterday afternoon. "But after long deliberation and throwing around a million scenarios in my head for the past day, I think it's just best if I stay retired."
Giants general manager Jerry Reese has asked the 36-year-old Strahan to reconsider his retirement Monday, just 48 hours after the Super Bowl champions lost Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora for the season to a knee injury in an exhibition game against the New York Jets.
Also, the Giants placed wide receiver David Tyree on the physically unable to perform list, meaning the player who made a game-saving catch in the Super Bowl won't be making any for at least the first six weeks of the season.
Manning returns
More than a month after having knee surgery and enduring weeks of rampant speculation about whether the injury was worse than feared, two-time NFL Most Valuable Player Peyton Manning finally provided his doubters with one emphatic answer yesterday: He's back, right on schedule."This is a significant step for me to get back out on the practice field," Manning said before throwing and running with teammates. "If things go well, as we expect they will, then I hope to be full go next week and ready for the season opener."
Manning will be limited in practice initially after being activated from the PUP list.
Also, the team cut former star Harvard running back Clifton Dawson.
Favre unlikely
Jets coach Eric Mangini said he's leaning toward not playing quarterback Brett Favre in the team's exhibition finale tomorrow night at Philadelphia.Favre repeatedly said he'd like to play, but also wouldn't be too disappointed if Mangini decided otherwise.
Also, the Jets announced a personal seat license plan that will cost some season ticket-holders between $4,000 and $25,000, but spares thousands of upper-level seats from the new fee.
Jurevicius out
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Joe Jurevicius was placed on the PUP list and will miss the first six weeks of the regular season while he recovers from knee surgery . . . The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, also recovering from a serious knee injury, on the PUP list . . . Bills quarterback Trent Edwards returned to practice after missing a week with a bruised right thigh, and said he should play in Buffalo's exhibition finale against Detroit tomorrow . . . Quarterback Carson Palmer will skip Cincinnati's last preseason game, tomorrow night against the Colts, resting his broken nose . . . That opens the door for coaches to settle on a third signal-caller - either veteran Brooks Bollinger or rookie John David Booty . . . NFL commissioner Roger Goodell didn't issue ultimatums after meeting with the five Rooney brothers about the uncertain ownership future of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
