Linebacker Brian Cushing, Houston’s first-round pick, won’t play in the Texans’ exhibition opener Saturday against Kansas City and could miss the second preseason game as well because of a sprained left knee.

Cushing did not practice yesterday and instead watched both workouts with a brace on his knee. Coach Gary Kubiak said no one is sure when he was injured, but the knee started bothering Cushing Tuesday night and he was taken for an MRI.

“It’s no big deal,’’ Cushing said. “It’s a knee sprain. We’ll move forward and I’ll keep getting the mental notes and I’ll be healthy soon.’’

Cushing, the 15th overall pick, is expected to start at outside linebacker.

Phillips won’t be charged
The San Diego city attorney’s office says Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips won’t be charged in a case in which he was accused of striking a security guard in the face at a downtown hotel in late April. Phillips was cited by police for misdemeanor battery after a security guard at the Ivy Hotel said the player hit him . . . Veteran linebackers Derrick Brooks and Derek Smith completed workouts with the Saints, leaving coaches impressed but uncommitted to signing either one of them. “Those guys are both in great shape,’’ coach Sean Payton said. “We’re not going to do anything right yet.’’ The club brought the two linebackers in for a look after learning that Mark Simoneau had a torn right triceps, which will require surgery . . . Jets left guard Alan Faneca will miss the team’s exhibition opener against the Rams tomorrow because of a broken finger . . . Colts safety Antoine Bethea has cracked a bone in his right hand, leaving him on the sideline for both practices yesterday. Coach Jim Caldwell did not give a timetable for Bethea’s return . . . Indianapolis tight end Dallas Clark is expected to miss tomorrow night’s exhibition game against Minnesota and could be out until Monday with a slight concussion . . . Browns receiver Braylon Edwards left practice early after he appeared to catch his foot in the turf during one-on-one drills. He walked off the field without a limp and was attended to by trainers. Edwards spent the rest of the session on a stationary bike.
