The Dolphins placed quarterback Chad Pennington on the reserve-injured list to create a roster spot for quarterback Tyler Thigpen, who was acquired yesterday from the Chiefs for an undisclosed draft pick.

Pennington hurt his right shoulder last Sunday at San Diego, an injury that leaves his career in jeopardy. At 33, he likely faces a third operation on the shoulder since 2005.

Thigpen shores up depth behind second-year pro Chad Henne, who is expected to make his first NFL start Sunday against Buffalo. Rookie Pat White is the Dolphins’ other QB.

Thigpen, a third-year pro, went 1-10 as a starter for the woeful Chiefs last year and threw for 2,608 yards with 18 TDs and 12 interceptions. Kansas City acquired Matt Cassel in the offseason, and Thigpen lost a battle this year with Brodie Croyle for the No. 2 job.

Trotter in, Garcia out
Jeremiah Trotter is back with the Eagles after a year away from the NFL.

The four-time Pro Bowl linebacker signed with the team, and to make room for him, the Eagles released quarterback Jeff Garcia.

“Jeremiah Trotter has always been one of my favorite players,’’ coach Andy Reid said. “He has worked very hard to keep himself in shape and we are pleased with where he is physically. We are excited to give him an opportunity to contribute to our team.’’

A 10-year veteran, Trotter, 32, last played with Tampa Bay in December 2007. He has credited knee surgery last year with making him feel he could return to the field.

Also, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick told a sparse crowd at a Washington, D.C., church that he regrets his decisions that led to prison time for running a dogfighting ring.

Jones knee hurting
Cowboys running back Felix Jones has a sprained ligament in his left knee and his status for the upcoming game at Denver is uncertain.

“It’s yet to be determined how long or if he will be out very long,’’ Dallas coach Wade Phillips said. “It could get well quickly.’’

An MRI yesterday showed Jones hurt his posterior cruciate ligament during the Cowboys’ 21-7 victory over the Panthers Monday night. As usual, he mixed some dazzling runs with questions about his durability.

He gained 94 yards on only eight attempts, including a 40-yarder on his final carry when he likely was hurt already. He also gained 20 yards on a reception.

Vobora suspended
The NFL suspended Rams linebacker David Vobora without pay for the next four games for violating its policy on performance-enhancing substances . . . A New York Times report said that a study commissioned by the NFL reports that Alzheimer’s disease or similar memory-related diseases appear to have been diagnosed in the league’s former players vastly more often than in the national population - including a rate of 19 times the normal rate for men ages 30 through 49. The NFL long has denied the existence of reliable data about cognitive decline among its players . . . League and Players Association officials each said yesterday’s bargaining session went well. The sides hope to negotiate a new labor deal after the NFL opted out of the collective bargaining agreement last year. The contract won’t expire until after the 2010 season . . . Albert Haynesworth’s wife is asking a Tennessee judge to force the Washington defensive tackle to pay veterinary bills, his daughter’s tuition, and other family expenses dating to when she filed for divorce in April 2008. She also wants a restraining order against him.
