I’ve stockpiled several running backs on my bench this season. The problem is, none of them have been any good.
This group is a Who’s Who of NFL backups: Ladell Betts, Samkon Gado, Glen Coffee, Justin Forsett, and Jamaal Charles. Only Coffee, a backup for the 49ers, has cracked my starting lineup, and that was when Frank Gore went down with an injury.
As in the case with Coffee, who didn’t produce when he played, my hope has been that a prominent starter would go down and his backup - resting comfortably on my bench - would step in and emerge.
This scenario could be unfolding in Kansas City, though. The Chiefs’ longtime starter, Larry Johnson, has been given a one-game suspension, so the door may be opening for Charles, Johnson’s backup. I may finally have an every-down back to pair with DeAngelo Williams.
The Chiefs are on a bye this weekend, so there’s time to let this unfold.
Three up:
Jason Snelling, RB, Atlanta (right): Snelling took advantage of increased playing time against Dallas with 68 rushing yards on seven carries. With regular backup Jerious Norwood hurting, Snelling is now one Michael Turner injury away from starting.
Fred Davis, TE, Washington: When starter Chris Cooley went down Monday night, Davis responded with eight catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. Cooley is out at least a month so Davis could be a revelation down the stretch.
Buffalo defense: In the last three weeks, the Bills have allowed 9.3 points per game and picked off 10 passes. Their next three opponents: Houston, Tennessee, and Jacksonville.
Three down:
Fred Jackson, RB, Buffalo: Jackson and Marshawn Lynch are no longer splitting time; the job belongs to Lynch. Jackson has just 15 fantasy points in his last three games and is no longer featured at the goal line or in the passing game.
Pierre Garcon, WR, Indianapolis: Anthony Gonzalez’s injury opened the door for Garcon and Austin Collie, but Gonzalez will return soon and Collie has supplanted Garcon (33 receiving yards in his last two games) as Indianapolis’s third wide receiver.
Reggie Bush, RB, New Orleans: Between the running and passing games, Bush is averaging just over 10 touches per contest. In his last three games, Bush - who does have three touchdowns this season - has rushed just 15 times and caught only seven passes.![]()
