Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis sat out practice yesterday because of a broken left hand, but he is expected to play in the AFC Championship game against the Colts Sunday in Indianapolis.
Ellis broke the hand on the Jets’ first defensive play in their 17-14 victory at San Diego last Sunday but later returned with a cast wrapped up like a club. He said he’ll have surgery to have screws inserted after the game against the Colts.
Linebackers Bart Scott (left ankle) and David Harris (right ankle) were limited, but coach Rex Ryan said they’ll play.
Running back Thomas Jones and fullback Tony Richardson were held out of the first practice of the week to give them some rest, as has been the case for the last month.
On the Colts’ side, cornerback Jerraud Powers sat out practice with a foot injury, the only Colts player to miss the entire workout. Coach Jim Caldwell has not said which foot Powers injured. Two other Colts, Pro Bowl tight end Dallas Clark (illness) and starting safety Antoine Bethea (bruised back), were limited in workouts.
Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards
is working hard to get his right knee healthy enough to play in the NFC Championship game at New Orleans.
Edwards was held out of yesterday’s practice because of the injury.
He was hurt in the third quarter of last week’s playoff win over Dallas, after recording three sacks and a forced fumble.
All-Pro defensive tackle Kevin Williams (knee) was also held out of practice.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger
turned down a chance to play in the Pro Bowl because of a right shoulder problem that developed late in the season. Roethlisberger would have gone in place of the Patriots’ Tom Brady
. Once Roethlisberger turned down the opportunity, Houston’s Matt Schaub
was selected . . . 49ers running back Frank Gore
has been added to the NFC squad, replacing the Rams’ Steven Jackson
, who nursed a troublesome back for much of the season . . . Giants receiver Steve Smith
will replace the Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald
, who pulled out because of a knee injury . . . Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman
was added in place of Cardinals’ Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
(sprained left knee).
First things first
In taking over as the Bills’ coach, Chan Gailey’s
first challenge is addressing a lingering problem: Identifying a starting quarterback. Asked about current QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick
and Trent Edwards
, Gailey said, “I know both guys have had some success playing in the NFL but they have not done it for a length of time with consistency. So can they? We’re going to decide that.’’ . . . Raiders owner Al Davis
has started interviewing potential assistants for next season even while he continues to mull the fate of coach Tom Cable
reported the Raiders interviewed Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson
about becoming the team’s offensive coordinator. NFL.com
reported the team interviewed recently fired Giants defensive line coach Mike Waufle
, who held the same position in Oakland in 1998-2003, to replace Dwaine Board
. . . Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart
posted on Twitter that he was having surgery to relieve chronic pain in his toe and left Achilles’ tendon.
