When the backdoor cover lurks, it has the potential to make or break your weekend.

According to urbandictionary.com, “backdoor cover’’ is defined as “when a sports team comes from behind at the end of the game and covers the spread.’’

That’s accurate. And it works for and against you, although you remember it most when it works against you. You remember the losers more than the winners.

Consider the Colts against the Bengals. If you were like me and had the Colts laying 7 points, you felt wonderful early (the Colts led, 17-0), unsettled at halftime (Colts, 20-10), and panicked midway through the fourth quarter (Colts, 23-10).

You know how this ended. The Bengals got a very late and very meaningless touchdown to make the score 23-17, that score held, and I wondered why I took up gambling instead of golf.

This week’s picks (home team in caps):

NEW ORLEANS (-11 1/2) over Seattle: The Seahawks are playing their second straight road game and are not even close to being in the Saints’ class. The Seahawks are capable against bad teams, or when catching a struggling team napping, but the Saints have regrouped and warrant laying such a big number. Risking $110 to win $100.

SAN FRANCISCO (-3) over Tampa Bay: It’s time for things to even out a bit. The surprising Buccaneers are trying to keep pace in the NFC South with Atlanta and New Orleans, and that’s too much to ask. It’s difficult to gauge whether 49ers coach Mike Singletary has control in San Francisco, or if he’s lost control, but his team has given itself a chance this season. Risking $110 to win $100.

Atlanta (-3) over St. LOUIS: I’ve been on board with the Rams’ resurgence, but they’ll have too much trouble scoring to keep pace with the Falcons. Risking $110 to win $100.

Buffalo (+5 1/2) over CINCINNATI: Think of the Bills as the Rams from last year. Despite being terrible, neither team quit. Buffalo did earn its first win last week, but even before that the Bills’ three prior losses were all by 3 points. The Bengals are unpredictable, making it difficult to wager on or against them, but they make too many mistakes. This game will be the beginning of a terrible finish to the season for Cincinnati. Risking $110 to win $100.

Last week: 2-3, minus $130. Season: 18-18-1, minus $373.
