Play-calling needs consistency: The Patriots have the best offense in the NFL, racking up 440.8 yards per game. The team certainly hit its stride in Week 4 and hasn’t looked back. But its progression has been hindered in part by questionable play-calling, including a dubious wide receiver reverse in the green zone (the opponent’s 20 to 35-yard line), a trick play to nowhere, and de-emphasizing star players Rob Gronkowski and Wes Welker. So long as the targets of Tom Brady’s passes involve one of the two, with the others sprinkled in, the Patriots will be fine. But the gadget plays do not benefit the team, as shown by their lack of success.
