A day after running back Brandon Bolden was suspended by the NFL for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, the Patriots filled his roster vacancy by activating tight end Visanthe Shiancoe from the injured reserve list.
Shiancoe, who was rehabbing from a shoulder injury, missed the first nine weeks of the season but was able to return after being placed on the NFL’s new “injured reserve with a designation to return” list. He signed with the Patriots July 25 as a free agent. He will be active for Sunday’s game against the Bills at Gillette Stadium.
With Shiancoe, the Patriots now have five tight ends on the roster, including Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Daniel Fells, and Michael Hoomanawanui. Hoomanawanui has also played some fullback for the Patriots.
