In a brief departure from thinking of themselves as a cold, emotionless corporation, the New England Patriots have announced discounts for fans purchasing the jersey of a player who leaves the team.

On its website, the Patriots Pro Shop offered details of the new “jersey guarantee” policy, which offers fans a “25 percent discount on a new New England Patriots jersey if the player named on back of the jersey they purchased is no longer under contract with the Patriots within one year of the purchase.” The site defines “under contract” as being on the 53-man roster, practice squad, PUP list, Injured Reserve or Non-football Injury or Illness list. There are a bunch of other nitty gritty details on the site as to who is eligible for the discount. The deal also applies to New England Revolution jerseys, for five of you out there who care about such things.

The new jersey discount program should greatly soften the blow when the Pats trade Tom Brady for a 4th-round pick next offseason.
