Catching up with Michael Timpson

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida -- He was the New England Patriots leading wide receiver when Drew Bledsoe first joined the team.

Michael Timpson played six seasons (1989-94) with the Patriots and his best season came in 1994 with Bledsoe at the helm when he caught 74 passes for 941 yards and three touchdowns.

“I had a decent career (in New England), but nothing like the career the guys are having there now,” said Timpson. “I’m happy for them, it’s just I came through there a little too early. I enjoyed my time there."

“It was great (playing with Drew). The first two years that Bledsoe was there I was there with him. You could tell even though he was a young quarterback he had greatness written all over him. It was only a matter of time before he was going to be a great quarterback. He has lasted this long and is still a very productive quarterback in the NFL.”

These days, Timpson resides in the Coral Springs, Fla. with his wife Edwena, who he has been married to for 16 years. The two of them have daughter Gabrielle, who is 11 and a son, Michael Jr., who is eight.

For work, Timpson works for 1400 FOX Sports serving as a sports analyst and is the head football coach for the Westminster Academy Lions located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

This year, the Lions put together a solid season with Timpson running the show and finished with a 5-4 record.

“I was enrolled at the seminary, which is part of the school,” said Timpson. “The coach that was there resigned and they asked me to do it. I hadn’t thought about coaching when I was playing because I know all the hours the coaches put in. Obviously at this level it’s not like it is in college and the pros.

“I told them I would do it. The most rewarding thing is you get a chance to really pull into these young kids lives. It’s not just athletically, but mentally and spiritually as well. That’s been a big reward for me.”

Outside of work, Timpson enjoys spending time with his family, especially after the hectic schedule he led playing in the NFL.

“I enjoy spending time with my kids,” said Timpson. “When you are in that rat race in the NFL, sometimes they grow up before your eyes. Now I take them to school and pick them up. That’s what I played for to give them the luxuries to do that. It’s all about my family right now.”

A fourth-round pick of New England out of Penn State, Timpson played a total of nine seasons in the NFL and made the biggest impact with the Patriots.   Continued...
