Receiver Caldwell likes this new route

FOXBOROUGH -- Two days into offseason workouts with the Patriots, new receiver Reche Caldwell already has hooked up with quarterback Tom Brady.

''I had the chance to meet with him [the last two days]," said Caldwell, who inked a two-year deal March 20. ''I'm looking forward to working with him, catching balls from him, learning the offense, and being a part of it."

The receiver-quarterback work is part of the Patriots' offseason program, which officially began Monday. For the 27-year-old Caldwell (6 feet, 215 pounds), it marks a fresh start after spending the first four years of his career with the San Diego Chargers.

''I really don't dwell on the past and what happened in San Diego," said Caldwell, a second-round draft choice in 2002, selected 17 spots ahead of Deion Branch.

''I'm just looking forward to moving on and being the best player I can be for this team and doing what I need to do to help this team win."

Caldwell has played in 47 games (14 starts), totaling 76 catches for 950 yards and 7 touchdowns. He has been issued David Givens's old No. 87, although he said he hasn't thought about trying to replace Givens.

''I'm not David Givens, I'm Reche Caldwell," he said. ''I never try to go out and be someone I'm not. I think it's a good opportunity for me here.

''Everybody is out there working hard, busting their butt, trying to get better, and it influences you to go out and work hard to try to get better along with them."
