It depends on the demand. In the $5 million-per-year range, yes. In the $6 million-per-year range, no. And then there's sorting out how much comes in the form of the upfront signing bonus, which could be anywhere from $8 million to $12 million. In the end, this shouldn't be about one side giving in to the other, but about reaching a point where both can feel good about the transaction. That's why the feeling here is that they'll meet in the middle.

The Patriots had to choose between paying Branch or David Givens. They chose Branch, so pay the man. At some point, the Patriots will have to pay a quality receiver to keep Tom Brady happy. It might as well be Branch, who already knows the system and has the quarterback's utmost respect. Since they have Branch for this season, there is no need to give him money now, but if they play it too cool, Branch will feel slighted and bolt for a better offer after the season. It's not my money, but I value loyalty and hard work, so I'd take care of No. 83 before the season starts.

Yes. They need to start paying and retaining their core stars. I realize Willie McGinest had aged, but for him not to play his entire career as a Patriot is a shame. Adam Vinatieri, what can I say, it should have been a no-brainer. I still trust Bill Belichick and I know that the NFL is cold-blooded, but some guys deserve as much respect as they always gave to the team by their performance. Oh, well, I'm sure there is a plan and the Patriots will compete, but anything less than a Super Bowl trip is a letdown now.![]()
