Belichick seems to indicate he's not near done
FOXBOROUGH -- Is 2007 the last year of coach Bill Belichick's contract?
While Belichick didn't directly answer the question, his response seemed to suggest otherwise.
"I don't talk about contracts, but I would say I like working here, I like the organization -- ownership, coaches, scouts, players, and the guys I work with. I appreciate the opportunity to work here and it's a good situation," he said.
"I don't see that changing any time soon."
Belichick's contract is one of the more closely guarded secrets in the NFL. He declined comment when asked how many years his contract had remaining, or if a recent extension had been struck.
Given the Patriots' aggressive offseason approach in free agency, it has been suggested Belichick might be loading up for a final championship run. His comments yesterday, which came after practice when he appeared relaxed and spent time with a few reporters, seemed to counter that thought.
One of the last public acknowledgements the Patriots made regarding Belichick's contract came in July 2003. At that time, with one year remaining on Belichick's deal, the team announced it had extended the pact for two years, through 2006.
In January 2006, the Globe reported Belichick's contract had been extended beyond '06, although the year the pact expired was not known.
