Patriot Ty Warren underwent surgery yesterday to repair torn abductor muscles in his groin that forced him to miss three games this season.

A source close to Warren said the defensive end underwent a procedure to deal with the injury, and another to remedy a sports hernia that dates to his college days.

Warren will be ready for the start of training camp, according to the source.

Warren, who will turn 28 Feb. 6, gutted out the final three games of the season with the torn groin, after the injury caused him to miss the previous two games and three of four. Warren said he was playing despite not being 100 percent, and would need surgery after the season.

Warren finished the season with 65 tackles (according to coaches' film review) and two sacks. But his production and playing time tailed off after he was hobbled. He did not record more than four tackles in any of the four games he played after suffering the injury.

The injury first kept Warren out in the Patriots' 34-31 overtime loss to the Jets Nov. 13. He returned the next week and started in a 48-28 victory over the Dolphins, but was less effective, registering three tackles. Then he sat out a loss to Pittsburgh and a win over Seattle, before returning against the Raiders Dec. 14, then playing in the final two games against Arizona and Buffalo.

It was while the Patriots were practicing in San Jose, Calif., in preparation for the Raider game, that Warren admitted if he played the rest of the season he'd be doing so in a limited state.

"Oh, yeah, I've been very honest and had to swallow my pride and selfishness as a player to tell the coaches that, 'Hey, I'm really no good to you on the passing downs,' " said Warren Dec. 12. "I won't be for the rest of the season. I can help on the run, and that's pretty much going to be my role for the rest of the season. I just do what I can do and contribute to the team, and that's what I'm going to do."

Prior to this season, the 6-foot-5-inch, 300-pound Warren had missed just one regular-season game in five seasons.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is scheduled to interview for the Rams' head coaching vacancy today. The Rams already have interviewed Jim Haslett, who coached the team for the final 12 games of the season after Scott Linehan was fired, and Green Bay Packers assistant Winston Moss. They were scheduled to interview former Giants coach Jim Fassel yesterday and Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan Sunday.

According to the Post-Dispatch, the Rams also have been granted permission to speak with Cowboys wide receivers coach Ray Sherman, Miami assistant head coach/secondary Todd Bowles, and Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.
