Taylor had passing interest in N.E.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Whether Jason Taylor would be a part of next weekend’s Dolphins-Patriots clash in Foxborough, Mass., was never really a question.
What team he’d suit up for was.
Taylor conceded Sunday, after he and the Dolphins defeated the Jets, 30-25, that there was a strong mutual interest between himself and the Patriots after the Redskins released the six-time Pro Bowler last March.
“We talked with them, with the organization, and with Bill [Belichick],’’ Taylor said. “My heart was in Miami, my family was in Miami, so it was important for me to try to stay there. But if it didn’t work out in Miami, then I probably would’ve been there.’’
Some circumstances changed during the months that followed, but Belichick was in touch with Taylor throughout the process.
On May 13, Taylor elected to return to Miami, where he spent the first 11 seasons of his career, on a one-year, $1.1 million contract.
He has responded by posting 5 1/2 sacks in his first seven games this year, and took a fumble recovery 48 yards for a touchdown yesterday.
The idea that he might’ve been doing similar things for New England was, in large part, because of the presence of Belichick and Taylor’s friend, Tom Brady.
“I have immense respect for Bill and Tommy,’’ Taylor said. “Like I said, if it didn’t work out in Miami, that’d definitely be a place I’d go, based on those two guys.’’
Taylor would have helped fill a need for an edge rusher that the Patriots addressed in August by trading third- and fifth-round picks to Oakland for Derrick Burgess, who has been largely ineffective in his first seven games in New England.![]()
