LAS VEGAS -- Patriots fans in need of some good news on this day of mourning will be happy to know that the Patriots are the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIII, according to the current odds at the sportsbook inside the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The Patriots, who opened with 5-2 odds on Jan. 13, hold that line in the most current update, Jan. 29 (and the big board at the MGM Grand still showed that line Monday morning). For those curious, the Indianapolis Colts are next at 5-1, while the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers are both at 6-1.

The champion New York Giants still get no respect and are at 8-1.

The Patriots are actually one of three Boston teams that are currently favorites to win their respective championships. The Celtics, who opened at 80-1 odds (a sign you can never quite trust preseason odds, particularly before teams retool their roster in the offseason), are the current favorite at 2-1. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are the World Series favorite at 5-2 odds.

As for the Bruins, they are the area’s long shot at 30-1.

  1. Chris this blog is incorrect none of these Boston favorites are odds-on. Defintion of odds on- "having a better than even chance of success".

None of the current teams Patriots (5/2) for next year, Celtics (2-1), or Red Sox (5/2) are odds-on. They are simply the favorites. An example of an odds on favoite would be odds that 4-5. Guessing you don't play the ponies.

    Forsberg's response:

Thanks for the info. I'll change the wording.

  1. Listening to the radio yesterday, they had RJ Bell of http://pregame.com on discussing the favorite to win the 2009 Super Bowl.

He said this early the odds can vary big from place to place, so he took a consensus to give the most accurate representation.

    Patriots 3/1
    Chargers 7/1

    Colts 7/1

    Cowboys 10/1
    Giants 12/1

    Packers 15/1

    Steelers 15/1

** One FYI, the best odds for any non-playoff team is the Philly Eagles at 25-1

  1. Hello? Pats, Celtics, Bruins but no Revolution? The Revs who have been to the playoffs forever, who have almost won the Championship so many times in a row? And you are so ignorant of that as to not even mention them? What century are you neanderthals living in anyway?

    Forsberg's response:

Evidently, it's a century where the MGM Grand doesn't have an MLS betting slip for us to check those odds.

  1. I think the pats were the favorites to win SB42 too werent they?? So many things can happen I just dont understand why everyone is already pinning their hopes on next year!!! Maybe its because they have tapes on all other 30 teams and have all winter to watch them??

    Forsberg's response:

Actually, the Patriots' opening odds for Super Bowl XLII weren't that great. According to one online site, New England opened at 10-1 odds. Remember that this was before the Moss acquisition and after the Colts had won the Super Bowl.

In fact, the Patriots faced longer odds than San Diego (6-1), Indianapolis (6-1), and Chicago (8-1).

Of course, those 18-1 odds on the Giants look mighty nice now.

  1. Great, as favorites what follows is another year of the national press following their every move (how will Belichick shake hands? God forbid, do they actually have video tape of another team? What's the blueprint?) I liked it so much better when the Pats were underdogs.
