FOXBOROUGH -- The Patriots are practicing on the lower field behind Gillette Stadium without linebacker Jerod Mayo, but with safety/special team ace Matthew Slater.

Slater, who suffered a left arm injury in the final exhibition game against the Giants, practiced for the first time since the injury. Media members were present for stretching and the start of team drills.

Mayo (sprained MCL in his right knee) was the only player not spotted.

Five players were wearing black practice jerseys, signaling that they were named the team's Practice Players of the Week for their work leading up to the team's 25-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

The Men in Black were:

QB Brian Hoyer
S Brandon McGowan
S Bret Lockett
WR Sam Aiken
QB Isaiah Stanback; Stanback is on the practice squad.
