Patriots coach Bill Belichick offered no definitive status update on defensive tackle Vince Wilfork and his injured left ankle.
"We’ll see how these guys are after the game," said Belichick. "I’m sure everybody’s got some bumps and bruises after this one, it was a physical game."
Pressed on if he'd put Wilfork in the "bumps and bruises category, Belichick added: "I haven’t seen him. I came right in here so I could talk with you guys. I haven’t really had a chance to see him."
Wilfork appeared to injure the ankle late in the first half on a run by Michael Turner. Wilfork stayed on the ground after the play before eventually walking off the field under his own power.
Trainers gave a quick look at the ankle before taking him back to the locker room. Wilfork did not return to the sideline in the second half.
In the locker room, there was plenty of chatter about stepping up in Wilfork's absence.
Said Leigh Bodden: "I think we have a great defense as a whole. The backups are pretty much starters and in any situation there is someone who can step in and fill the void. That’s a good job that Bill does to get players who can fill those roles."
Added Mike Wright: "There’s a lot of depth on the defensive line, especially with Myron [Pryor] stepping in and Ron [Brace] stepping in. but hopefully, we’ll have Vince [Wilfork] back as soon as possible."
Pryor didn't offer a health update, but did talk with Wilfork after the game, an encouraging sign.
"It’s reality, but I was ready to step in and [Wilfork] congratulated me after the game and told me ‘good job,' " said Pryor. "I felt like I did well out there. It took a couple plays to get back in the mix. I really had to step back, as far as tempo. At first, I was kind of nervous, but after awhile, I just settled in and mentally, everything went smoothly."
