FOXBOROUGH -- The Patriots have signed linebacker Bruce Davis to their practice squad. Davis was in the team's locker room today and has been assigned No. 49.

He takes the place of linebacker Prescott Burgess, who was plucked off the Patriots practice squad by the Baltimore Ravens on Monday.

The 6-3, 252-pound Davis was a 2008 third-round pick of the Steelers. He played in five games last season for Pittsburgh and was released by the team in the final roster cutdown before the season. He is primarily viewed as an outside linebacker who can rush the passer.

Davis, who played at UCLA with Matthew Slater and Bret Lockett, said he was just happy to be in football.

Davis worked out for the Patriots last week. He said he had also worked out for Indianapolis, Denver and Buffalo.

Davis sounded humbled by his time out of the game.

"It's kind of like being a freshman in college again. You got to start over," he said. "You got to start from the bottom and at this point I'm willing to do whatever it takes. Do what you got to do at this point, and when you're sitting at home and you're wondering whether you're ever going to play again it really changes your perspective on the game and how much you love the game and what you're willing to do to get back in the game. At this point, I don't care what they ask me to do. I'll go wash the windows if I have to. I'm just happy to be back."
