Going deep on Moss
Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his weekly interview with WEEI-AM. One of the points Belichick covered in the interview was how the Broncos' coverage was geared towards Randy Moss.
"They played a lot of the game in some type of coverage over the top to Randy and tried to squeeze off everyone else," said Belichick. "We got to do a better job of running the ball and we got to have a better job of having everybody contribute to the passing game. That's the long and short of it."
Moss has been getting the short of it this season, with teams refusing to let him beat them deep and quarterback Tom Brady self-admittedly misfiring when Moss has gotten behind defenses.
Moss caught as many balls from Brady (one for 36 yards) as he did from Denver quarterback Kyle Orton (one for 57 yards). The Patriots use Moss as part of their Hail Mary prevent defense and at the end of the first half he intercepted a desperation heave from Orton at the New England 3 that was thrown from the Denver 40.
That 57-yard catch of Orton's ball is Moss's longest of the year, of course it doesn't count. The 36-yarder he caught from Brady is his longest this season, through five games. Only twice before in his career has Moss gone this deep into a season without a reception of 40 yards or more.
In 2002, it wasn't until the sixth game, when he had a 46-yard reception against the Jets, and in 2001, Moss didn't record a catch of 40 yards or more until the ninth game, a 57-yard TD against the Giants, although he had a 39-yarder in the fourth game.
The Patriots either have to take better advantage of the attention being paid to Moss or find a way to get him the ball.
