Mayo returns from MCL injury, is active
DENVER -- The announcement of the inactives and the absence of Jerod Mayo from the list means that Mayo will make his return today.
Mayo will play for the first time since he suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee during the first quarter of the Patriots' season-opener Sept. 14.
Mayo did not undergo surgery for the injury, and the rehab has allowed him to return to the field less than a month after the injury.
With Mayo active and both defensive linemen Ron Brace and Terdell Sands inactive, it could be an indication that the Patriots plan to play more three-man fronts against the Broncos.
The return of Mayo gives the Patriots enough depth to play some 3-4 looks with Mayo and Guyton at inside linebacker. However, it would be surprising if Mayo was employed on a full-time basis. He might need to be limited to 20-25 snaps coming back from the injury.
