FOXBOROUGH -- According to two league sources, the Patriots have re-signed previously released linebackers Tully-Banta-Cain and Eric Alexander to one-year deals.

Banta-Cain and Alexander both got new one-year deals that take them through the end of this season. They are not extensions.

The reasoning for the new one-year deals is that both players were on one-year, $620,000 minimum salary benefit deals that precluded the team from extending or renegotiating their contracts.

That provision is why procedurally both players had to be released and signed to new one-year deals, instead of simply remaining on the roster and having their deals tweaked.

Now, on the new one-year deals, the team can reach extensions with both players if they so choose prior to the end of the season.
