Patriots running back Fred Taylor needs surgery on his right ankle but isn't expected to miss the rest of the season, according to a report by ESPNBoston's Mike Reiss this afternoon.

Taylor, 33, is in his first season with the Patriots after spending the first 11 seasons of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is the Patriots' leading rusher this season, with 201 yards on the ground and a 4.5 yards per carry average.

Taylor is 15th on the all-time rushing list in NFL history despite being plagued by injuries. He has missed 32 regular-season games with injuries in his career and has played all 16 games just twice.

According to the report, Taylor was injured on his final carry during the Patriots' 27-21 win over the Ravens last Sunday. He limped off the field after a 3-yard gain and has not practiced this week.
