Players under the spotlight

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff November 8, 2009 12:52 PM

As kickoff nears, here's a quick look at players could have a major impact on today's game.

1. Ron Brace and Myron Pryor: The two rookies are the only active backups on the defensive line because of Jarvis Green's knee surgery. Brace is active for the first time since Week 3, and he has not played in five consecutive games. The BC product will be a factor, good or bad, because the physical style the Dolphins use on offense and the Patriots use on defense necessitates substitution along the line.

2. Ben Watson: The Dolphins start two rookie cornerbacks, Vontate Davis and Sean Smith. If the Dolphins choose to give them safety help to cover Randy Moss and Wes Welker, Watson could have big day going over the middle. Watson was questionable with a back injury that limited him in practiced, so his availability is a significant factor.

3. Stephen Gostkowski: In Ted Ginn, the Dolphins have the hottest kick returner in the NFL. The best way to stop a kick return? A touchback. Gostkowski's strong leg could save the Patriots a load of special teams headaches.
