We're now closing in on a week without a defensive coordinator for the Patriots.

So how will the next pieces fall into place? Denver could provide your guide.

The Broncos' parting with Mike Nolan has plenty to do with familiarity. Quite simply, the new Dolphins' defensive coordinator didn't bring that to the the table with Josh McDaniels, and Dean Pees -- late of the Pats -- would.

McDaniels wanted a like-minded DC to work with. Bill Belichick will, too.

That's why the smart money remains on linebackers coach Matt Patricia.
