My buddy Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger in Jersey is reporting at this hour that the Giants have cut veteran middle linebacker Antonio Pierce.

I'm sure you guys would wonder what kind of fit he'd be in Foxborough.

First and foremost, the Patriots could use another linebacker to pair with Jerod Mayo on the inside of the defense, and the fact that Pierce has experience playing on all three downs would help his cause here.

He's never been too much of a big-play guy, though he'll make some, but at his best, Pierce is a smart, steady tackling machine. The drawback, from a physical standpoint, would be his size. If the Patriots brought him in, they'd likely want him to play the "Ted Johnson" Mike role, and allow Mayo to be the flow guy, more freed up to run to the ball, and whether Pierce can/wants to run his head into a guard 30 times a game can be questioned. The other thing that must be investigated is the condition of the serious neck injury that ended his 2009 season.

Now, the real upshot: Pierce's leadership. He's been a captain, was one of the guiding lights in the Giants' championship run of 2007, and might help to stabilize the locker room on the defensive side of the ball. He's vocal, and that's something New England lacks. Plus, he's sure to have a chip on his shoulder the size of the Meadowlands.

What do you guys think?
