And here's Tully's deal ...
Late last night, we gave you the details on Vince Wilfork's new contract with the Patriots. And as we wait for Wilfork's conference call in a few minutes, let's take a look at another one of the new contracts for a guy who'll be sticking around.
Here's what we have on the three-year deal signed by Tully Banta-Cain:
SIGNING BONUS
$6 Million
BASE SALARIES ($6.9 Million)
2010: $800,000
2011: $2.3 Million
2012: $3.8 Million
WORKOUT BONUSES ($600,000)
2010: $200,000
2011: $200,000
2012: $200,000
INCENTIVE CLAUSES ($4.5 Million)
2010: $1.5 Million
2011: $1.5 Million
2012: $1.5 Million
What you see here is that the deal is actually for three years and $13.5 million ($4.5 million/year) with the chance, as we reported last week, for incentives to kick it up to $18 million and $6 million per year. Without knowing specifically what the incentive clauses call for, it's hard to say how real the $18 million figure is. Teams sometimes put in unreachable terms in (ex: a "League MVP" or "Super Bowl MVP" incentive for a role player) simply to pump the numbers up and make the agent and player look good. Not sure if that's the case here.
One more thing to consider ... Agents have taken, of late, to emphasizing how much players get "before the lockout". Provided Banta-Cain picks up his workout bonus, he'll take home between $7 million and $8.5 million before the start of the 2011 League Year, when the lockout would begin. By comparison, Vince Wilfork will take home $19 million before the beginning of a potential lockout. Traditionally, the Patriots have spread the big bonus money out on deals, and that probably helps explain why the club has given lump-sum single-year bonuses on these two deals.
